The prestigious Kodava Hockey Academy, renowned for its rich legacy in promoting Kodava family hockey, is witnessing an unprecedented moment in its history as the formation of its next governing board sparks intense curiosity. For the first time since the Academy’s inception, elections are expected to be fiercely contested, signalling a new chapter in its administration.
The roots of this unique hockey tradition trace back to 1997, when the Kodava Hockey Festival was launched through the Pandanda Cup, an initiative aimed at bringing together Kodava families. Pandanda Kuttappa, widely recognised as the father of the Kodava family hockey festival, played a pivotal role in establishing the tournament, which began modestly with 60 teams. Today, the festival has expanded dramatically, with participation from 396 families, and has earned a place in the Guinness World Records, Limca Book of Records, and World Book of Records, attracting attention not only in Kodagu but across the globe.
First-time contested elections:
Initially, the festival was organised independently, without a formal institution. As the event grew in scale and popularity, the need for systematic management became evident. In 1999, the Kodava Hockey Academy was established as a registered institution with its own by-laws to oversee the annual festival. Pandanda Kuttappa continued as the founding president until his demise during the COVID-19 period. His son, Pandanda Bopanna, succeeded him and has been effectively managing the Academy’s responsibilities ever since. Alongside Bopanna, Makeerira Ravi Pemmaiah have played significant roles, including serving as Working President, ensuring continuity in the Academy’s operations.
Under the Academy’s framework, elections for the governing board are held periodically. However, since its establishment, there had been no contested elections; appointments were made without voting. The current board’s term concluded last May, but elections were initially delayed due to the annual festival. A subsequent schedule set for August 31 was also postponed following guidance from retired election officer Chokira Poovaiah.
Elections set for September 28:
Now, with elections officially scheduled for September 28, the Academy is entering a historic phase. Two teams are set to contest for the new governing board, marking a significant departure from past practices. The first team is led by the current president, Pandanda Bopanna, while the second team is headed by Makeerira Ravi. Additionally, independent candidates Somanna Theethimada and Deepu Devaiah are also contesting. The official election processes have already begun, generating considerable interest among members and supporters of the Kodava hockey community.
