Madikeri: Following a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for Kodagu district, the district administration has declared a holiday for all Anganwadi centres, primary, high schools, and PU colleges on Tuesday, December 3.
The precautionary measure was announced by Anand Prakash Meena, CEO of Kodagu Zilla Panchayat.
The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated instances of extremely heavy downpours, over the next two days. This weather is attributed to the remnants of Cyclonic Storm Fengal, now a well-marked low-pressure area, which is expected to move towards the Arabian Sea. The system is likely to intensify weather conditions along its trajectory, according to an IMD press release issued at 1 pm on December 2.
For December 3, the IMD forecast indicates that isolated heavy rain is likely to occur in Kodagu. Rainfall intensity is expected to decrease after December 4, with light to moderate showers predicted for Kodagu and neighbouring districts.
As per the IMD weather bulletin issued at noon on December 2, the remnants of Cyclone Fengal are currently located over North Interior Tamil Nadu. The system is anticipated to move westward, re-emerging over the Arabian Sea near the north Kerala-Karnataka coast by December 3. This could sustain rainfall activity in Kodagu and adjacent areas over the coming days.
