Kodagu Left in the Dark: District Administration’s Monsoon Preparedness a Complete Failure

Kodagu, known for its natural beauty and resilience, has once again been brought to its knees—not by nature alone, but by administrative apathy and poor planning. The Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) and the Kodagu district administration have failed miserably in preparing for the inevitable onslaught of the monsoon. This failure has plunged large parts of the district into darkness for nearly a week, severely affecting daily life, local businesses, healthcare services, and communication.

According to a press release, 1,442 electric poles, 11 transformers, and over 13 km of electric wiring have been damaged in the last one and a half weeks. While the scale of destruction is significant, it is not unprecedented. Every year, monsoon rains and winds batter the region—yet CESC and the administration appear to have learned nothing from previous years.

Incessant rain and strong winds over the past ten days have indeed hampered repair work, but it is evident that the network was already fragile and poorly maintained. The frequent power disruptions and delays in restoration work point not just to the intensity of the weather but to the lack of emergency preparedness and preventive infrastructure strengthening.

Kodagu deserves better. The people of this hill district should not have to endure darkness and disruption each time the skies open up. CESC must be held accountable for not upgrading vulnerable sections of the power grid before the rains. The district administration, too, must answer why pre-monsoon reviews and emergency response mechanisms failed.

It’s time for a serious audit and overhaul of the power infrastructure in Kodagu. Nature’s fury cannot be controlled—but its impact can certainly be mitigated through foresight, planning, and accountability, all of which have been in short supply this monsoon.
