Bengaluru: Two social media influencers, Rohan Cariappa, a Kodagu native, and Shaayan Bhattacharya, from Bengaluru have been apprehended by Bengaluru's cyber crime police for allegedly sharing an Instagram video that is said to have mocked and disrespected the hearing-impaired community.
The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) lodged a complaint with the Delhi police in the third week of July, accusing the duo of ridiculing sign language and violating the Right to Life with Dignity Act, Section 21, as well as the IT Act 2000. This complaint was also echoed by the deaf community in Bengaluru, leading them to file a similar case with the local cyber crime police.
Since Cariappa and Bhattacharya are based in Bengaluru, Delhi police enlisted the city's police force to aid in their arrest, as reported by TNIE.
Rohan Cariappa, a resident of Kengeri and a content creator known for his comedy sketches on Instagram, has a following of 1,32,000. Shaayan Bhattacharya, also known as RJ Shaayan, works as a radio jockey for a private FM station in Bengaluru. Both individuals have since removed the controversial video and issued an apology.
The video in question reportedly depicted a sign language interpreter making inappropriate gestures and using offensive language under the guise of humor.
