Virajpet: The Karnataka government has approved a ₹ 2.8 crore project to establish a sewage treatment plant (STP) in Virajpet, aimed at addressing the pollution issues affecting the Cauvery River.
The initiative comes in response to the rapid growth of the town, where improper handling of waste, including solid waste, has contributed significantly to environmental pollution.
Virajpet Municipal President MK Dechamma Kalappa recently informed reporters that the government had sanctioned the project, which was secured through the efforts of Virajpet MLA A.S. Ponnanna. Currently, wastewater from both residential and commercial establishments flows directly into the Cauvery, exacerbating pollution levels.
The new STP will be constructed on a 3-acre plot within the municipality limits. Once operational, the facility will treat the wastewater, ensuring that only purified water is released back into the river, thus reducing pollution, according to Dechamma. Municipal council members, including Pattada Ranji Poonachcha, DP Rajesh Padmanabha, SH Mateen, and Mohammad Rafi, were present during the announcement.
Dechamma further said that the construction of this STP is a significant step toward improving Virajpet's waste management system and safeguarding the Cauvery River, which holds immense ecological and cultural importance for the region.
