Bengaluru: Karnataka’s Forest, Ecology, and Environment Minister Eshwar B. Khandre has directed officials to submit a detailed report after a cricket match was found to have taken place within the core zone of the Nagarhole Tiger Reserve.
The incident, which surfaced on Thursday, 20 November, drew attention after videos and photographs circulated widely on social media. The game was reportedly played near the Nanchi safari point. Social media users also alleged that recent visuals, when compared with satellite imagery from 2011, hinted at possible loss of forest cover in the vicinity.
Expressing concern, Khandre said the matter was serious, especially at a time when encounters between people and wildlife are increasing. He also questioned how such an activity could be permitted in a protected area.
Senior forest officials in Nagarhole clarified that those seen playing cricket were members of tribal communities residing in the haadis located inside the reserve.
The tiger reserve contains 64 such settlements, and officials said residents have traditionally used open spaces within the forest for recreational activities. Nevertheless, the Minister has asked for a comprehensive report within a week to assess any violations and determine further action.
