Madikeri: In response to growing concerns about landslides in Kodagu, the Geological Survey of India (GSI) is scheduled to conduct a crucial study of the district next week. This development follows relentless advocacy by Madikeri MLA Mantar Gowda, who has been calling for comprehensive landslide susceptibility mapping in the region.
Landslide susceptibility refers to the likelihood of landslides occurring in a particular area based on an analysis of various factors, including soil composition, slope, vegetation, and environmental conditions such as rainfall and seismic activity. By assessing these factors, experts can identify areas prone to landslides, predict potential occurrences, and implement measures to prevent or mitigate damage.
Mantar Gowda has been vocal about the need for such mapping, emphasizing its importance in mitigating and preventing landslide disasters and understanding the evolving mountain landscape of Kodagu. Through persistent tweets, media statements, and formal appeals, he has drawn attention to the urgency of studying landslides across the district, especially in light of the recent heavy rains that have heightened the risk of landslides.
Kodagu Deputy Commissioner Venkat Raja confirmed that the GSI team will visit Madikeri next week to conduct this critical study. The investigation aims to assess vulnerable areas within the district and develop strategies to manage and reduce landslide risks effectively. This initiative is expected to provide valuable insights into the factors contributing to landslides and offer recommendations for enhancing safety and resilience in the region.
