Virajpet: Virajpet police in Kodagu have installed Artificial Intelligence (AI) cameras, a traffic enforcement system commonly seen in major cities like Mysuru and Bengaluru. The new surveillance measure aims to enhance road safety and ensure stricter adherence to traffic rules, the Virajpet police said.

The Artificial Intelligence (AI) cameras are designed to automatically capture images of vehicles at intersections, detecting violations such as overspeeding, and failure to wear seat belts or helmets. The cameras will also help identify vehicles involved in hit-and-run cases, aiding law enforcement in tracking offenders efficiently.

Police officials have urged motorists to strictly follow road safety regulations, emphasising the mandatory use of seat belts for car drivers and helmets for two-wheeler riders. “These cameras will help us monitor and penalise those who disregard traffic rules. We request all motorists to drive responsibly and follow safety norms,” an officer said.

Authorities believe that the introduction of this automated enforcement system will reduce accidents caused by reckless driving. With increasing traffic in Virajpet, especially during market day which is Wednesday in Virajpet and festival seasons, the installation of flash light cameras is expected to bring discipline to the roads.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to modernise traffic management in Kodagu, aligning it with enforcement measures in larger urban centres. The police have also appealed to residents to support the initiative by adhering to traffic laws, ensuring safer roads for all.

Correction: In our previously published article, we mentioned that flash light cameras were being installed in Virajpet. However, we would like to clarify that the system being implemented is actually ‘AI-powered traffic enforcement cameras’.
