Madikeri: As the southwest monsoon approaches, the district administration in Kodagu has begun early preparations to ensure that farmers do not face shortages during the crucial agricultural season. At a recent meeting of the District Fertilizer Committee in Madikeri, Deputy Commissioner S.J. Somashekhar stressed the need for timely action, particularly in light of forecasts indicating an early onset of rains in the region.

Why is fertiliser supply a concern ahead of the monsoon?

The monsoon season marks the beginning of intense agricultural activity in Kodagu, where crops such as coffee, paddy, and spices require adequate nutrients for healthy growth. Officials have cautioned that demand for fertilisers, especially urea, is expected to rise sharply once rains begin. In previous years, delays in supply or uneven distribution have affected farming operations, making advance planning essential this time.

What steps has the administration taken to prevent shortages?

To address this, the Deputy Commissioner has directed officials to maintain sufficient stocks of key fertilisers such as urea, DAP (Di-Ammonium Phosphate), and MOP (Muriate of Potash), in line with anticipated demand. Departments have been instructed to ensure that there is no disruption in supply across the district and to immediately flag any issues to the administration. The focus is on creating a system where fertilisers are not only available in adequate quantities but are also distributed efficiently to all parts of the district.

How is the administration promoting sustainable fertiliser use?

Alongside ensuring availability, officials are also emphasising the importance of scientific and sustainable agricultural practices. Farmers are being encouraged to use fertilisers based on soil health, rather than relying on excessive or indiscriminate application. Departments such as Agriculture, Horticulture, the Coffee Board, and the Spices Board have been tasked with creating awareness among farmers about the appropriate use of different fertilisers, with the aim of improving soil fertility and long-term productivity.

What role does coordination play in this plan?

A key focus of the administration’s strategy is improving coordination among various stakeholders, including government departments, suppliers, distributors, and retailers. Better coordination is expected to ensure smooth availability and prevent bottlenecks in the supply chain. During the meeting, fertiliser suppliers and distributors also shared their inputs, indicating a collaborative approach to tackling potential challenges.

How are officials addressing concerns about fake fertilisers?

Another important issue raised during the meeting was the risk of spurious or low-quality fertilisers entering the market. The Joint Director of Agriculture highlighted the need for distributors and sellers to educate farmers on identifying genuine products. This step is aimed at protecting farmers from financial losses and ensuring that crops receive the right nutrients.

What is the current stock situation and outlook?

Officials reviewed the current stock position of various fertilisers, including urea, DAP, MOP, NPK complexes, and SSP. While stocks are presently being monitored, the administration remains cautious given the likelihood of increased demand with the early arrival of the monsoon. The coming weeks will be crucial in ensuring that supply keeps pace with demand.

What does this mean for farmers in Kodagu?

The administration’s proactive approach is intended to minimise disruptions during the agricultural season and support farmers in maintaining productivity. By ensuring timely availability, encouraging responsible usage, and strengthening coordination, the district aims to create a more resilient fertiliser supply system. For farmers, the emphasis will be on staying informed, adopting recommended practices, and making the most of the support mechanisms in place.
