Exclusive|Karnataka Continues to Dominate India's Coffee Sector as Production and Exports Rise

The data shows Karnataka produced 2,56,695 tonnes of coffee in 2025-26, a marginal increase from 2,56,000 tonnes in 2024-25 and 2,54,575 tonnes in 2023-24.

New Delhi: Karnataka retained its position as India's largest coffee-producing and coffee-exporting State in 2025-26, accounting for nearly 69% of the country's total coffee production and around 67% of the total value of coffee exports, according to a reply tabled in the Rajya Sabha by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

The data shows Karnataka produced 2,56,695 tonnes of coffee in 2025-26, a marginal increase from 2,56,000 tonnes in 2024-25 and 2,54,575 tonnes in 2023-24. During the same period, India's total coffee production increased from 3,60,500 tonnes in 2023-24 to 3,73,000 tonnes in 2025-26. Kerala remained the second-largest producer with 80,350 tonnes, followed by Tamil Nadu at 19,975 tonnes and Andhra Pradesh at 15,290 tonnes.

Karnataka also led the country in coffee exports. The value of coffee exports—including green coffee, roasted and ground coffee, and instant coffee—from the State rose from USD 814.04 million in 2023-24 to USD 1,398.86 million in 2025-26. Nationally, coffee exports increased from USD 1.286 billion to USD 2.083 billion over the same period. Andhra Pradesh ranked second with exports worth USD 339.33 million, while Tamil Nadu and Kerala recorded exports valued at USD 93.08 million and USD 84.99 million, respectively.

Replying to an unstarred question in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada said India continues to be an export-oriented coffee producer, with more than 70% of the country's coffee output exported, while the remainder is consumed domestically. The Coffee Board estimated domestic coffee consumption at around 91,000 metric tonnes in 2023-24, out of the total production of 3,60,500 metric tonnes.

The Ministry also outlined measures being taken to promote value addition in the coffee sector through the Integrated Coffee Development Project (ICDP). Under the scheme, the Coffee Board provides financial support for modernising coffee curing units with improved processing technologies and assists roast and ground coffee units in establishing roasting, grinding and packaging facilities. Support is also extended to growers for developing drying yards, godowns and pulper units to improve farm-level processing.

To encourage exports of higher-value products, the Coffee Board promotes value-added coffees, including freeze-dried instant coffee sold under the 'Coffees of India' brand. According to the Ministry, exports of value-added coffee increased from USD 468 million in 2023-24 to USD 686 million in 2025-26, registering a growth of 46.58%.
