Madikeri: The revival of the famed GI-tagged Kodagu oranges, also known as ‘Coorg oranges’, is gaining momentum, according to T.K. Behra, Director of the Indian Agricultural Research Centre. Speaking at the inauguration of the Kodagu Orange Revival and agricultural equipment distribution programme in Chettalli near Madikeri, Behra highlighted the ongoing efforts to rejuvenate this prized crop.
"The Central Horticultural Experimental Centre at Chettalli is playing a pivotal role in reviving the cultivation of Kodagu oranges. The climate of Kodagu is highly favourable for cultivating exotic fruits, and the Centre is focusing on conducting experiments in this regard. We are also planning to deploy more staff to support these initiatives," Behra explained.
He urged orange growers in Kodagu to actively promote their produce and aim for international markets. "The GI-tagged Kodagu oranges hold significant potential, and farmers should explore avenues to make their produce chemical-free, which will help them tap into niche markets," he added. He expressed concern over the decline in orange production in recent years but remained optimistic about reversing the trend through focused efforts.

Coorg Oranges: A Unique Legacy
Kodagu oranges, also called Coorg oranges, are a distinctive variety known for their sweet-sour taste and unique fragrance. These oranges have earned a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, which signifies their origin and quality. Grown primarily in the hilly terrain of Kodagu, the oranges have been a key part of the region's agricultural heritage, though their production has faced a decline in recent years due to changes in farming practices and environmental factors.
J.D. Deepaja S.M., Joint Director of the National Agricultural Development Project, highlighted the importance of making farming profitable to ensure the revival of Kodagu oranges. "One of the biggest challenges is to ensure farming is financially sustainable. Co-operative societies should come forward to support branding efforts, which will help expand the market for these oranges," she said.
The revival of Kodagu oranges is seen as a significant step towards preserving the region's agricultural identity and ensuring the economic stability of local farmers.
