Madikeri: The Codava National Council (CNC) has announced that it will observe the United Nations International Women’s Day on March 8, 2026, near the Collectorate and District Administration buildings in Madikeri.
According to a press release issued by CNC chairman N.U. Nachappa Codava, the programme will be held from 10.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. under the global theme “Give to Gain”. The organisation stated that the theme, which emphasises generosity, collaboration and shared progress, aligns with its broader mission of advocating for the indigenous Codava community.
The council said the event would focus particularly on the empowerment of Codava women and safeguarding the rights of what it described as a “micro indigenous mono-ethnic animistic” community. Among its key demands are protection of ancestral lands, preservation of the mother tongue and cultural heritage, and economic and political safeguards under the Constitution.

The CNC has reiterated its long-standing demand for Codavaland geo-political autonomy under Articles 244 and 371, read with the Sixth and Eighth Schedules of the Constitution. It has also sought internal political self-determination, special political representation in Parliament and the Assembly, and Scheduled Tribe classification for the Codava community.
The organisation further called for a separate code and column for indigenous Codavas in the 2027 national population census and restoration of what it termed the “original history” of the community in State archives and libraries. A 33% internal reservation quota for Codava women and restitution of ancestral properties allegedly confiscated during pre-colonial and British rule have also been demanded.
Following the programme, a memorandum will be submitted through the district administration to the President of India, Prime Minister, Union Ministers concerned, the Chief Minister of Karnataka and international bodies, including the United Nations.
The CNC stated that the event would be conducted in a peaceful and cordial manner.
