Bengaluru: A 20-day-old baby girl, allegedly abandoned due to a cleft lip birth defect, was rescued by police in Bengaluru and her parents traced to Virajpet in Kodagu district, police said on Sunday.
The infant was found on April 24 inside a parked auto rickshaw near the Mysuru Road Satellite Bus Stand by concerned residents, who alerted the Byatarayanapura police. Officers promptly ensured her safety and handed her over to child welfare authorities.
An investigation, led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Bharath S Reddy, was launched to trace those responsible. CCTV footage from the area showed a couple loitering near the autorickshaw before abandoning the baby. The visuals also captured them carrying the infant shortly before she was left behind.
Following this lead, police tracked the couple to Virajpet. Investigations revealed that the child was allegedly abandoned because of her cleft lip condition. Further inquiries disclosed that the man involved was already married and was in a relationship with the child’s mother.
Police sources said appropriate action is being taken in coordination with the Child Welfare Committee, and the matter is being handled with sensitivity given the infant’s condition.
