Madikeri: In a shocking revelation, 15 children under the age of five have died in Kodagu district over the past four months, according to the district administration.
The alarming statistics were disclosed during a review meeting on child and maternal mortality held at the Madikeri Deputy Commissioner’s office. Dr. Madhusudhan, Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) officer for Kodagu district highlighted that between July and October, the district recorded 15 child fatalities.
"Seven of these cases were attributed to preterm birth, genetic factors, and complications such as bleeding and breathing difficulties during birth. The remaining deaths were caused by issues like fever, cold, cough, and the use of herbal medicines," he said, adding that over 87% of deliveries in Kodagu take place in government hospitals.
Reacting to the grim data, Additional Deputy Commissioner R. Aishwarya stressed the importance of proactive measures to prevent child mortality. “Awareness about maternal and child health is essential for everyone. Good health ensures a well-functioning family, which in turn contributes to economic growth,” she said.
She directed health and family welfare officials to ramp up awareness campaigns on health and hygiene, particularly in rural areas, and ensure timely vaccinations for children under five. Aishwarya also emphasised the importance of encouraging pregnant women to attend regular health check-ups.
